Pressured by Del Mar tuitions, truck payments, and rising poke prices, local realtors have been scrambling to find new income streams to tide them over until 2036, when JD Vance will finish his second term and the local real estate market is expected to finally bounce back.
Leading the way – as usual – is Wanderlust. The handmade jewelry and smoke accessories table directly across the street from Wanderlust is – well – actually owned by Wanderlust, and has been quietly saving their bacon for nearly a year now. News broke last week that Surfing Nosara has bought Coconut Harry’s, and will be converting the location into a strip club, keeping two small couches in one corner for the informal acoustic jam sessions that always seem to happen at strip clubs.
But in a move that may redefine Nosara real estate forever, Blue Zone Estates is now brokering properties in K-Section to local construction firms, offering turn-key solutions for up to 30 construction laborers – with easy access to Bodhi Tree, Organico, and all the other amenities that set the K-Section lifestyle apart.
Noticing a fresh open-house listing in the K-Section Whatsapp chat, we caught up with Blue Zone broker/owner Mary Anne Watson as she was showing a very desirable 25 bed, 1 toilet and no shower property – just steps from the beach – to three prospective clients, who had nothing but good things to say about the green fabric fencing, the steps carved into the earth that led up towards the outhouse, and the 9 dogs that were listlessly awaiting new owners.
“I know a lot of people think this should be beneath us,” said Watson. “But times are tough. I got Del Mar tuition to pay. I don’t know the first thing about running a strip club. And if you think I am the only one doing this, you got another think coming.”
Struck by these words, we decided to have a look around K-Section. Sure enough, at least half a dozen realtor signs were – when we looked closely – actually placed in front of very similar lots. Clearly, this niche market was heating up. But Blue Zone was definitely the top dog.
We went back and asked Watson what her secret was. Without even blinking, she said, “I bribe the drivers.”
Respect. Serious respect for the gringa. Bribing the white-truck drivers was old school, smash-mouth, get-it-the-fuck-done Nosara execution. “200 for bringing me the owner. 500 if a deal gets done. And a tuk-tuk full of beer from Rinde Mas.” Watson paused. “You know, everybody wants to get their house built, but they would rather these guys live under plastic on a riverbank somewhere out of sight. I don’t make the rules here. I don’t like any of this. But these guys at least deserve somewhere better to live than that.”
“And I got Del Mar tuition to pay.”
