Nosarans awoke this morning to yet another mind-bending development in the local Gondola war between Bodhi Tree and the grass-roots business alliance assembled by Casa Vitality. Our correspondent in Brussels filed this report over telegram, due to yesterday’s 5.9 earthquake that cut Nosara off from the outside world.

BEGINĀ  UN pledges 200 million to Casa Vitality Gondola STOP Cites support for indigenous Nosaran tribe as reason STOP Funds to be diverted from women’s health program in Eitreria STOP Requests bank account information at Lafise STOPĀ  This sounds like a joke but it’s not STOP

Braving aftershocks from the quake, Nosara Lately hastened down to our dedicated “Outpost Basic” co-working spot at Ventanita and fired up our encrypted transatlantic internet channel, reaching Bjorn Thunquist, head of Indigenous Studies at the University of Stockholm and chair of the UN Committee on Indigenous Cultures. Alert readers will remember Thunquist as the driving force behind the UN’s provisional recognition of Nosara’s largest indigenous population, The Beautiful Nosara Fam. Thunquist had this to say:

“What I think people are missing about Casa Vitality’s Gondola plan is that it will be a huge step forward in protecting the Beautiful Nosara Fam. Most of this indigenous group lives in the lower-income section of the area – a place called ‘Pelada’ – yet their tribal headquarters and ceremonial shala are some 6 miles away at Casa Pacifico, in one of the wealthiest areas in Nosara. Not only will the new gondola route connect these two locations and strengthen the tribe’s social cohesion – it will eliminate one of the tribes biggest internal conflicts – the brutal nightly battle where the entire tribe competes for the three available parking spots outside Casa Pacifico”

Local observers do not think any of this is an accident. “Casa Vitality knew damn well this would happen,” said one. “Slam dunk way of getting UN money. Make sure your Gondola connects two parts of an indigenous tribe.”Ā  Others saw darker forces at play. One Howlers regular put it this way: “The biggest danger to indigenous tribes- historically – is alcohol. All three mid-stations are located at bars. You think this is all just a coincidence?”
